The lower body & hips provides stability, they ground us, they keep us stable. We are generally less flexible per default in the hips than compared to say the shoulders, as it should be. But due to our lifestyle today, where we spend hours upon hours sitting down (both during “office hours” and in our spare time) and because of the fairly repetitive movement-patterns we have (walking, biking, maybe running) our hips and lower back tends to “tighten up” way too early in life.

According to Chinese Medicine the Fire element correlates with Summer and is about our emotions, courage and wisdom. It is also called sometimes called the element of 'heartmind' because the heart is considered closely related to our mental and emotional life at this time. Our hearts expand at this time of year, like a chalice in the centre of our bodies holding the fire of our spirit. (The Tao philosopher Lao Tsu  said that it is the emptiness of the chalice, the cup, that renders it useful. He said that the  emptiness at the centre of our heart is the space where our spirit/consciousness resides.
